Problems of smallholder pig farms production system
- Growth rate of growing pigs about 100-200 g/day and the rearing period up to 8-10 months to reach market weight (80-100 kg) for selling
- This is because of farmers have a poor understanding of pig nutrition and management
- The major problem is low reproductive performance, piglets have low growth (20-50 g/day) and high mortality (30-50%).
- In Lao PDR, meat consumption in 2020 was approximately 40-50 kg per capita per year (MAF, 2020), but the aim is to achieve a total meat supply of 73 kg per capita and year by 2025 (MAF, 2021)
